HANG A BOX

Have a good place for a kestrel box? We provide boxes to people with access to suitable habitat where they can be safely mounted and put to use, with pickup available in Bakersfield or at select birding, Audubon, falconry, and conservation events.

Do you have a good location?

Good Locations

  • Open fields, pastures, ranches, farms, or large rural properties

  • Areas with plenty of open hunting space and short grass or low vegetation

  • Agricultural land, orchard edges, vineyards, grasslands, or open lots

  • Places where the box can be mounted high and securely on a pole, post, barn, or similar structure

  • Locations with a clear flight path to the entrance hole

  • Properties where the box can remain undisturbed long-term

  • Places where the landowner has given clear permission

  • Sites where occasional updates, photos, or nesting activity can be reported back to us

Poor Locations

  • Small suburban backyards with little open hunting space

  • Heavily wooded areas or places with dense trees blocking the entrance

  • Areas with heavy foot traffic, constant disturbance, or frequent activity near the box

  • Places with lots of outdoor cats or obvious predator issues

  • Locations where the box cannot be mounted safely or securely

  • Spots too close to busy roads, unsafe work areas, or places that are difficult to access

  • Public land, utility poles, schools, churches, or businesses without proper permission

  • Temporary locations where the box may need to be removed soon

Have Somewhere To Hang A Box?

Through donations and community support, we build kestrel boxes and make them available to people who have access to suitable habitat. Since good nesting locations are just as important as the boxes themselves, we rely on landowners, farmers, birders, falconers, and community members who can safely place them where kestrels have open space to hunt and raise young. Boxes are currently available for local pickup in Bakersfield and at select birding, Audubon, falconry, or conservation events throughout California. If you have access to a property that may be a good fit, please review the placement criteria and fill out the form to request a box.

Where would you like to hang a box? Please be thorough, including either a specific address, coordinates, or detailed description. If requesting multiple boxes, please specify all locations.

If possible, please share photos, videos, etc. of your requested location.
